S.F. officer shot during police chase released from hospital
San Francisco police officer Brittney Taylor was released from a hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries to her leg after a shootout with a suspect last month, the department announced Friday morning.
"We're thrilled to share that Officer Brittney Taylor has been released from the hospital and is now home with her family," the department said in the Facebook post, which included a 1½-minute video of Taylor leaving San Francisco General Hospital. "We wish her a speedy recovery as she spends time with her loved ones."
The agency thanked the hospital for its "outstanding care and support."
Watch: SFPD releases footage of Bayview shootout where officer, suspect were critically wounded
Taylor was shot while chasing a suspect on May 31 in the Bayview. Norris Reed III, 36, faces two counts of attempted murder and other felony charges in connection with the shooting.
Taylor and other officers chased Reed through city streets that night until he crashed his gray 2021 Toyota used in an earlier armed robbery at the Bayshore Boulevard on-ramp to Highway 101, according to court records. The suspect opened fire and struck Taylor in the leg, police said.
The passenger in the car was also struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Reed was arrested uninjured after fleeing the scene.
Taylor's wounds required multiple surgeries, according to court records. Supporters have donated more than $125,000 to a fundraising site for Taylor.
In the video posted Friday, a smiling Taylor is escorted out of the hospital in a wheelchair, her left leg in a cast. Mayor Daniel Lurie shakes her hand. Taylor appears to get emotional as she gets wheeled past a line of saluting first responders.
The video ends with Taylor using crutches to stand and being led away in a car with a procession of emergency vehicles.
