Sacramento-based McClatchy has announced the appointment of entrepreneur and technology executive Vijay Ravindran to its board of directors, effective Jan. 1.
McClatchy, publisher of The Sacramento Bee and 29 other newspapers, noted that Ravindran is the co-founder and CEO of Floreo, a startup developing virtual reality therapy for children with social and communication delays. The website is floreotech.com.
Ravindran has extensive management experience in retail with Amazon.com and within the media industry with The Washington Post Co.
“Vijay’s understanding of the essential role of local journalism, coupled with his broad technology and leadership experience, will contribute significantly to our business growth and digital transformation,” McClatchy President and CEO Craig Forman said in a statement accompanying Tuesday’s announcement.
Ravindran joined Amazon in 1998 when the company primarily was known for selling books and music. He later served as director of the ordering department and led the team that launched Amazon Prime.
As chief digital officer for The Washington Post Co., he founded WaPo Labs and oversaw the development of more than a dozen digital news products.
The engineering graduate of the University of Virginia will become the 12th member of the McClatchy board.
