Why Nugget Markets was named one of ‘best companies to work for’ by Fortune magazine

Woodland-based Nugget Markets earned a spot on Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for 2020.

Coming in at No. 79, the family-owned company moved up two spots on the list. The company currently employs 1,900 people and says it has never had a layoff in its 94-year history.

“We have a strong culture of family and fun at the core of everything we do,” Eric Stille, president and CEO of Nugget Markets, said in a news release. “We come together as one family to create something very special and have fun with our guests and each other. As a company, we have three main goals: guest satisfaction, constant improvement and to be a world-class employer. I am so proud of our teams for making these goals become a reality—they aren’t just words on a wall, they’re what we live by.”

There are 12 Nugget Market locations in Northern California, as well as a Fork Lift by Nugget Markets in Cameron Park, Food 4 Less in Woodland and Sonoma Market in Sonoma.

Entry level associates at Nugget earn a minimum of $15 an hour, and opportunity for growth is touted by the company. As a specialty grocery store with gourmet items that it creates in-house, Nugget Markets employs a variety of positions from experienced chefs, bakers, cheese specialists and more.

Hilton earned the No. 1 spot on the list. Another grocery store, 104-year-old Wegman’s Food Markets was listed at No. 3.

To identify the 100 best companies for workers, Fortune partners with Great Place to Work. The list is based on survey responses from employees rating their workplace on elements such as compensation and benefits, hiring practices, training, diversity, trust in managers, fairness and camaraderie.
