24 Hour Fitness closing 130 gyms, one in Sacramento, after coronavirus bankruptcy filing

Nationwide gym chain 24 Hour Fitness announced Monday it has filed for bankruptcy and will permanently close more than 130 locations, including 42 in California.

With fitness centers closed for about two months due to the coronavirus pandemic and only being permitted to reopen in the past few weeks as states loosen their social distancing mandates, the company announced it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and “closing clubs that were either out-of-date or in close proximity with other 24 Hour Fitness clubs.”

The Carmichael location, at 5114 Arden Way, is the only closure in the immediate Sacramento area, according to a list posted to the 24 Hour Fitness website. Other Northern California locations that are on the closure list include the gym at West Benjamin Holt Drive in Stockton, the gym on North Main Street in Manteca and 13 locations in the greater Bay Area.

“If it were not for COVID-19 and its devastating effects, we would not be filing for Chapter 11,” CEO Tony Ueber said in a prepared statement.

24 Hour Fitness had about 420 locations in 14 states prior to the closures, leaving fewer than 300 remaining.
