Sporting goods chain to open first Sacramento-area store in 2016

Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc., a major sporting goods retailer that’s been eyeing the Sacramento market for years, is making plans for its first store in the region.

The Pennsylvania retailer has filed paperwork with the city of Folsom to open a store at a former Save Mart Supermarket on East Bidwell Street, said city spokeswoman Christine Brainerd.

She said the store is expected to open in the fall of 2016.

The supermarket occupied nearly 50,000 square feet of space.

Dick’s has been interested in greater Sacramento for some time. When the Mervyns department store chain folded in early 2009, area real estate brokers said Dick’s was considering taking one or more of Mervyns’ locations in the area.

Dick’s operates 618 stores; its closest store to Sacramento is in Stockton. The company earned $344 million last year on sales of $6.8 billion. Officials with the company couldn’t be reached for comment.
