Home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Sunday and will soon begin to “wind down” operations at hundreds of U.S. stores, including four in the Sacramento area.

The main Bed Bath & Beyond brand has a location at Arden Arcade, in Town and Country Village at 2725 Marconi Ave., and one in Roseville, at 1120 Galleria Blvd.

Buy Buy Baby, a subsidiary of Bed Bath & Beyond that is also shutting down in the bankruptcy, has a store in Elk Grove (7621 Laguna Blvd.) and one in Roseville, immediately next door to the Bed Bath & Beyond on Galleria Boulevard.

Store closing sales with “deep discounts” will begin this Wednesday, Bed Bath & Beyond said on a bankruptcy FAQ page on its website; the stores will stop accepting coupons the same day.

All stores are expected to be closed by the end of June, Bloomberg reported.

The company in a January update said it was expecting a net loss of approximately $385.8 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2022, and had reportedly closed more than 230 of its stores since the start of 2022.

According to the bankruptcy filing, Bed Bath & Beyond has about 14,000 remaining non-seasonal employees across 473 stores for an average of about 30 employees per store. Exact employee numbers for the Sacramento-area stores were not immediately available.

“We have made the difficult decision to begin winding down our operations,” a message on the Bed Bath & Beyond website reads.

Bed Bath & Beyond in its FAQ said it would stop accepting returns and exchanges for items May 24 for items purchased before Wednesday. Purchases made during store closing sales are final.
