A top executive will step down at Origin Materials, the West Sacramento firm that makes sustainable materials.

The company said in a regulatory filing Tuesday that Rich Riley will resign as co-CEO effective Dec. 31. Riley and John Bissell have held the chief executive title together.

“I want to thank Rich for his valuable contributions to Origin these past four years,” Bissell said in a news release. “During Rich’s tenure, Origin became a publicly listed company, and he was instrumental in positioning Origin for our next phase of growth.”

Bissell said the change to a single-CEO structure would make the company more nimble as it expands its manufacturing work next year.

Riley has been an advisor and investor for Origin since 2010, and was hired as co-CEO in 2020. He will continue to serve in an advisory role through the end of 2025.

The company’s board also appointed its chief financial officer, Matt Plavan, to take on an additional role as chief operating officer, also effective Dec. 31.
