Over 100 Macy’s employees in Sacramento County to be laid off as 2 local stores close

More than 100 workers will be laid off when two Sacramento-area Macy’s locations close, according to notices filed with the state, as the retailer looks to shutter struggling department stores.

The company confirmed last week that Sacramento’s longtime downtown Macy’s location, which has served as an anchor for the Downtown Commons since 1963, was slated for closure, along with a store at the Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights. According to the notices, 71 people work at the downtown location, and 61 work at the Citrus Heights store.

The company was under pressure to improve profitability and take advantage of its significant real estate holdings. The Sacramento County stores are two of 66 that the company has identified as set for closure nationwide.

The company hasn’t disclosed its plans for the downtown property, a large piece of real estate in a central part of the city’s urban core. Members of the business community have floated several possibilities for redevelopment that could fill some of the city’s needs for hospitality or housing.

The company simultaneously filed layoff notices for four other locations scheduled for closure across the state, in Newark, Los Angeles, Westminster and Corte Madera. In total, 470 workers are employed at all six stores.

The company had not previously confirmed exact closure dates for the stores, though spokesperson Orlando Veras said in an email Tuesday that a clearance sale would begin “soon” at the downtown location and run for eight to 12 weeks, suggesting the site would remain open into early March or early April.

According to the state notices, the final layoffs at the two Sacramento-area stores will take effect March 31.
