The Sacramento Municipal Utility District has been awarded a $600,000 U.S. Department of Energy grant to improve the resiliency of its electrical grid.
SMUD’s Resilient Grid Initiative utilizes technologies to increase reliability, improve grid efficiency and make the grid more resilient to natural disasters, cyberattacks and other emergencies.
The grant extends and expands upon the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s Smart Grid program, through which SMUD received more than $127 million in DOE funds in 2009. That grant helped SMUD install more than 600,000 smart meters to allow the electrical grid to quickly respond to changing energy demand.
