The Budweiser plant in Fairfield will shut down over a two-week period in February, according to a notice filed with the state.

The company had not previously disclosed the timeline for the closure, nor the number of people employed by the plant, though city officials had estimated the number was between 200 and 250. The notice confirmed that the plant, located at 3101 Busch Drive, employs 238 people. Many are production workers, and others are analysts, managers and maintenance workers.

Anheuser-Busch confirmed, last week, that the closure was part of a larger move to shutter three U.S. breweries that collectively employ 475 people. The company said it would offer workers positions at other locations. Anheuser-Busch has another brewery in the Los Angeles area. The move, the company said, would allow it to invest in its remaining sites. In addition to Fairfield, the company will also close facilities in Newark, New Jersey and Merrimack, New Hampshire.

The news came as a shock to Fairfield officials, who said the plant is one of their city’s largest employers and its top water customer. Fairfield’s mayor said she believed the closure would compel the city to raise rates for residents and businesses.

Observers of the industry had speculated that A-B may close production sites, as consumers cut back on spending and younger generations cut back on alcohol. Competitor Molson Coors had already made moves, over the past two years, to cut jobs and shut down breweries.
