West Sacramento bottle-cap manufacturer to cut staff by ‘little more than half’
Origin Materials, an organization that specializes in selling sustainable water bottle caps, cut 35% of its workforce as part of widespread restructuring.
The news comes shortly after CEO John Bissell announced in a news release the company is closer to administering caps to “multiple world-class beverage brands.” Founded in 2008, Origin Materials went public in 2021.
About 100 people were employed at its West Sacramento firm.
“If you back into the numbers, I guess that puts at something, like, little less than 40 probably still at West Sac,” Bissell said. “But it’s—it’s in that ballpark.”
Origin Materials makes its caps from polyethylene terephthalate, commonly known as PET. The organization has touted PET caps as an alternative to commercial caps, noting that they are a better recyclable option.
On Feb. 12, Origin Materials said while its closer to delivering caps, it has taken “longer to reach this point than expected,” according to a news release.
“We believe (this) has not had a negative impact on the strong interest in our product but has negatively impacted our stock prices and consumed more resources than project,” Bissell said in a news release.
Origin Materials’ operating expenses have also been cut from $40 million to $29 million, regulatory filings stated. As a result, the company’s global workforce will decrease by a third, according to previous Bee reporting.
In an interview with the Bee, Bissell said Origin Materials has sold caps to two companies so far, Berlin Packaging and Power Hydration. Bissell said Berlin Packaging is among “the largest cap wholesale sellers in retailers,” while Power Hydration was a “direct brand” and “tiny test customer.”
Origin Materials has a total of 82 employees in the United States, with 27 in Canada, according to past regulatory filings from December 2024.
