Bobby Coyote, owner-operator of the Davis-based Dos Coyotes Border Café chain of restaurants, is getting into the franchise business in Los Angeles County.
Coyote said Friday that the plan is for a franchisee to open five restaurants in the next five years, with another 20 opening in Southern California over seven to eight years.
The franchisee company is Dos Coyotes LA Inc., but Coyote says his company will have oversight of particulars at the new franchised sites.
“It’s something I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time, and now I think the time is right,” he said.

Coyote said that the development team in Los Angeles is expected to sign next week with commercial real estate firm CBRE to scout out the potential cafe sites.
Coyote plans to open a new Dos Coyotes in 2015 at 15th and R streets in downtown Sacramento at a former state office building renovated by Sacramento-based Cordano Co. He said he’s collaborating with Cordano on another possible cafe site in Citrus Heights. He said he’s also working with a prospective franchisee to open restaurants along the Highway 99 corridor.
Dos Coyotes currently has two restaurants in both Davis and Sacramento and one each in Roseville, Folsom and Elk Grove. The first Dos Coyotes opened in Davis in January 1991.
