Statewide new vehicle registrations are on track to crack 2 million by the end of this year, which would mark the first time that threshold has been reached since 2006.
Through September this year, new vehicle sales in California totaled 1.54 million, according to the third-quarter report released Friday by the Sacramento-based California New Car Dealers Association.
The association is projecting 2.03 million sales by the end of 2015.
Statewide sales totaled 2.04 million in 2006, one year after the all-time high of 2.15 million in 2005. In 2009, during the depths of the recession and amid a flurry of California dealership closures, sales totaled only 1.04 million, the lowest volume since 1975.
