SMUD warns of payment scam targeting business customers

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District is warning business customers about scammers threatening to disconnect power if immediate payments are not made via MoneyGram or Reloadit cards, or via pay stations at CVS or Safeway stores.

SMUD said it does not have authorized pay stations for business customers at any CVS and Safeway stores or accept bill payments from MoneyGram or Reloadit.

The utility said scammers also tell business customers to call back at a non-SMUD phone number that triggers a recording of the utility’s phone-based customer service menu.

However, when the customer chooses a menu option, SMUD said the call goes to voicemail or is answered by someone posing as a SMUD employee.

SMUD business customers receiving suspicious calls can call 877-622-7683.
