Squaw Valley Ski Resort was named the best ski resort in North America in a USA Today poll.

Four skiing experts came up with a list of 20 top ski resorts for the USA Today 10Best.com website, and readers voted for their favorites on the site. The website produces annual reader polls on favorite tourist destinations.

Squaw Valley and sister site Alpine Meadows are located near Truckee. Squaw Valley hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, “and has only gotten better since then,” according to the website. “While extreme skiers and riders love Squaw Valley, a quarter of the terrain is suitable for beginners and another 45 perfect for intermediates.”

Squaw Valley beat out several perennial giants in the ski world, including Aspen Snowmass and Whistler Blackcomb.

“We are overjoyed to share this award with the entire Reno-Tahoe community, which works together to provide an award-worthy experience for our guests,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.
