Dunkin’ Donuts opened a Folsom store Tuesday and there are plans to open another in East Sacramento.
Founded in 1950, the company has close to 12,000 stores worldwide. Oddly enough, the main draw for many East Coast and Midwestern devotees when it comes to Dunkin’ Donuts is the coffee, not the carbs.
Some swear that Dunkin’ coffee rivals Starbucks and Peet’s. But convincing Sacramento residents that coffee revered by those to the east is better than the firmly established West Coast coffee purveyors has been a chore.
In 2002, the chain announced a big push in the Sacramento area, promising 50 outlets over three to five years. However, those hopes faded and a Dunkin’ restaurant that opened on Power Inn Road ultimately closed.
In the recent comeback, a Roseville Dunkin’ Donuts opened in October at 5010 Foothills Blvd. before Tuesday’s debut of the Folsom restaurant at 9601 Greenback Lane.
The Folsom location, open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., is operated by Sizzling Donuts franchise group. The franchisee brought the first Dunkin’ Donuts to Modesto in 2014 and opened the Roseville location and a Tracy restaurant in 2015.
“We are confident that Dunkin’ Donuts will quickly become the chosen destination for Folsom’s morning coffee, afternoon pick-me-ups and late-night treats,” Sizzling Donuts President Mitch Lowe said in a news release.
To celebrate the grand opening, a limited supply of gift cards were handed out to customers Tuesday. Free samples also were available.
Another Dunkin’ Donuts is scheduled to open this summer in East Sacramento at 5801 Folsom Blvd., across the street from Corti Brothers market.
