IRS says new tax scam targets students
The Internal Revenue Service this week issued a warning to taxpayers about bogus phone calls from IRS impersonators demanding payment for a nonexistent tax called the “federal student tax.”
IRS officials said scammers are calling students and demanding immediate payment of the bogus student tax. Callers threaten to report the student to police if the tax is not paid. Some callers also try to get personal information from the students.
Scam calls can be reported on the federal Treasury inspector general for tax administration website, treasury.gov/tigta, or by calling 800-366- 4484.
