When are taxes due? When can I start filing? Here are key 2024 dates and deadlines
It’s that time of year: tax season.
The IRS expects more than 128.7 million tax returns filed by the spring deadline.
Here’s what you need to know about when your tax return is due, when you have to pay and when you’ll get your refund.
Key 2024 tax dates and deadlines
IRS Free File is available now. It opened Jan. 12.
Fourth quarter estimated tax payments were due Jan. 16.
The IRS will start accepting and processing your 2023 tax returns on Jan. 29. That said, if you’re using a software company or tax professional, they could accept your electronic submission and hold onto it until the IRS begins processing.
The IRS Direct File pilot program is undergoing final testing. It should be rolled out in mid-March to taxpayers in participating states.
The deadline to file a personal federal tax return, pay any tax owed or request an extension is April 15.
Because of the Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day holidays — which are not federal holidays — taxpayers in Maine or Massachusetts have until April 17.
If you file for an extension, your due date is Oct. 15.
When will you get your refund?
The IRS said it issues most refunds in less than 21 days. You can check your refund status by using Where’s My Refund on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app.
