What’s it like to live in a loft behind a historic clock? Take a look

It was only a matter of time.

A New York loft behind a historic clock with views of the Brooklyn Bridge, East River and the Empire State Building has hit the market for the first time in 23 years, priced at $2.35 million.

Perched on the top floor of the Eagle Warehouse at 28 Old Fulton Street in Brooklyn, the loft comes with a doorman, live-in superintendent, on-site manager, bike storage and a recently renovated fitness center and lobby.

The warehouse was originally constructed in 1892 and the site formerly served as headquarters to the Brooklyn Eagle, a well-known local newspaper once edited by the famous poet Walt Whitman, according to the listing.

“In the late 1800s and early 1900s, most large towns had one or more businesses that would put clocks near the peak of their buildings or construct clock towers for time keeping, advertising and prestige,” according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com, which wrote about the Eagle Warehouse property. “Many of these buildings have been torn down over the years, but some have been maintained and repurposed into condominiums or apartments.”

Last September, The Sacramento Bee wrote about a penthouse in San Francisco’s Schmidt Lithography Company clock tower, constructed in 1907, that affords spectacular views.

The Brooklyn apartment, with 1,260 square feet of living space holding one bedroom and one bath, offers views of river traffic and the Manhattan skyline through its working clock face. The apartment has 17-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, impressive millwork, brick walls and enormous skylights in both the living room and master bedroom. The spa-style bathroom is tiled in Indian slate. The master bedroom has heated flooring.

The building was given landmark status in 1977 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, TopTenRealEstateDeals.com reported. In 1980, a developer bought the place and converted it into 85 residential units.

“The clock apartment has always been considered the cherry on the top,” the website said.

The Brooklyn property is located at the entrance of Brooklyn Bridge Park, a beautifully landscaped 85 acres stretching 1.3 miles along the water.

The listing agents are Nick Gavin and Josh Doyle of Compass, Manhattan office.

Editor’s note: This article was revised on March 1, 2020, to change the description of the Brooklyn, N.Y., residence from “penthouse” to loft and to clarify the history of the warehouse.
