Despite coronavirus, this $11.2 million Aspen penthouse sold at highest price this year

An Aspen penthouse just sold for $11.2 million, marking the highest recorded apartment sale in the Colorado ski resort town so far this year.

Atop the Crandall Building across from the Aspen Art Museum in the middle of Aspen’s year-round winter skiing and summer hiking activity, the sophisticated residence offers three bedrooms and four baths, light-filled living space that spans 2,824 square fee and floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Originally listed at nearly $16 million, according to the official listing site, the penthouse also offers a hot tub and a rooftop sundeck with unobstructed mountain views.

“Crisp and contemporary throughout, surfaces sport the latest in upscale materials, fixtures and appliances,” wrote TopTenRealEstateDeals.com, which obtained permission to share photos of the penthouse (see video above). “Designed on an open plan with walls of glass and a welcoming fireplace, entertaining is a breeze and can spill out onto the large wrap-around deck and upstairs to the roof deck and night town lights.”

The condo offers a two-car garage in a town where parking spots are hard to come by.

The deal closed March 20, 2020, according to the listing, in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has changed the way people buy, interact and travel.

The listing agents were Joshua Saslove and Riley Warwick of Douglas Elliman.

Warwick told Mansion Global that Aspen has recently lured luxury buyers from states with higher taxes, such as California.

“I have seen young families move here to raise their kids, as the parents can work remotely anywhere in today’s age,” he said in the article.

He also said that despite the Covid-19 outbreak, higher-priced residential properties in Aspen are still relatively in demand.

Mansion Global said the buyer has yet to be identified, and the transaction for the property, 630 E. Hyman Ave No. 301, hadn’t appeared on property record.

Aspen, both quirky and elegant, draws year-round tourists attracted to the town’s skiing, snowboarding, hiking, art galleries, dining and summer concerts and festivals.

Home prices range from reasonable to extremely expensive. Aspen celebrity sightings include Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner.
