Apple co-founder’s massive, 14,000-acre Carmel Valley ranch listed at $37.5 million

Former Apple chief executive officer Mike Markkula has listed his massive Carmel Valley estate for $37.5 million.

Markkula is a co-founder of Apple and provided seed funding to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak for the company.

The property, a working cattle ranch known as Rana Creek Ranch, has been listed for a third time. With over 14,000 acres, Rana Creek Ranch is the largest land holding in Carmel Valley, according to the listing.

The property was previously listed in 2013 with an asking price of $59.95 million and again in 2016 for $45 million.

Residential improvements to the land include a 5,413-square-foot main house, guest house and five other homes. Agricultural improvements include several barns, equipment storage, greenhouse, corrals and fencing. There is also a large office building/conference center that has potential for many uses.

The estate includes a 2,900-foot paved airstrip and a helipad.

“Aside from its sheer magnitude, perhaps the greatest feature of Rana Creek Ranch is its ZIP code and everything that comes with that, an idyllic year-round climate and all that the county of Monterey offers,” the property’s listing agent, Bill McDavid of Hall and Hall, told The Bee.

Recreational opportunities on the ranch are extensive. For equestrian enthusiasts, there’s a large riding arena as well as miles of trails for hiking or horseback riding. Hunters will find that black-tailed deer, wild boar, quail and wild turkey abound on the land. There’s also a lake.

The listing cites a recent study by a group of environmental consultants that concluded that the ranch is well suited to a mitigation bank for species preservation including California red-legged frog and California tiger salamander. There is also “some potential for stream enhancement and riparian wetland restoration,” the listing states. “This mitigation bank could provide meaningful income streams for the ranch over time.”

“I first visited Rana Creek Ranch 10 years ago and the property almost immediately made it onto my top-five list of favorite ranches,” McDavid added. “There is something so comfortable about this ranch. It is big enough to get lost on, yet every acre is intimate.”
