Huge ranch on California coast with redwood forest, secret Prohibition bars for sale
A 564-acre ranch on the coast near Silicon Valley that was once a wedding gift and has been in the same family for more than 100 years is on the market for $22.5 million.
Located in the small town of San Gregorio, California, the property envelops 80 acres of towering redwood forest and holds views of the Pacific Ocean. Its diverse landscape rises to 1,000 feet above sea level.
The unique parcel offers a picturesque two-bedroom main cabin on a large pond. The home was built during Prohibition and contains two secret bars where Charles Lindbergh and Gregory Peck once poured themselves a drink, according to the marketing material.
Back in the 1920s, the owner’s great aunt and uncle received the ranch as a wedding gift, according to Mansion Global.
Nearby is so-called “Cooks Cabin” with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
The largest home on the property, however, is Rose’s Cottage with five bedrooms, four baths and an expansive lawn area. An outdoors dance floor has been used for entertainment and weddings.
In all, there are 12 bedrooms and eight baths available on the land.
Across a bridge over Corte Madera Creek, a ticket booth stands. It was once used by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company “but most recently has served as a wedding cake station or an outdoor bar,” according to the official listing.
The ranch is bordered by the Corte Madera Creek on one side and the Bogess Creek on the other.
“It is the perfect area to hike, horse back ride or ride dirt bikes,” according to the listing.
A Baverian-style main barn built in 1936 has two stories. A working barn is used by cattle that graze the land, allowing the property to come under the Williamson Act, which provides tax relief if the land is not be developed or converted to another use for 10 years.
The owners have planted hay and barley in open fields.
In total, there are six homes on the property. Two of them need of repair “but remain in case a new buyer may want to develop or remodel homes in these locations lessening the county permitting process,” the listing states.
The acreage comes with riparian water rights so the property “still has plenty of water for each of the houses and to maintain the landscaping and animals,” according to the listing. Storage tanks holding 35,000 gallons of water and a stock pond offer more capacity.
The listing agents are Cutty Smith and Dana Cappiello of Sotheby’s International Realty — San Francisco.
