Sacramento mid-century modern – with sweet conversation pit, reflecting pool – sold
An exquisite mid-century modern home in Sacramento — highlighted by a sunken conversation pit with a drop-down fireplace in the middle and a stunning reflecting pool outside — has quickly sold for $1.385 million.
Susan Pillon, a real estate agent and huge fan of the mid-century modern style, spent a year updating the Sacramento home, making sure the original details remained intact and the redesign stayed true to the era.
The home was designed by prominent Sacramento architect John Harvey Carter. Pillon bought the residence, built in 1968, from the original owners. It hadn’t been on the market in more than 50 years, and remained fairly untouched during that time.
The home at 729 Columbia Drive, in the Arden Arcade area, spans 2,232 square feet on nearly a third of an acre with three bedrooms and three baths.
After the remodel, the home hit the market in December 2021 and the sale was finalized on February 9, 2022. The home sold for the asking price.
“The people who bought it weren’t even looking for a house, but they saw this house and had to have it,” Pillon said. The retired couple is moving from San Leandro, she added.
The home generated national interest after The Sacramento Bee featured it in an article on December 16, 2021. More than 100 people showed up at the first open house, Pillon said.
“The reflecting pool, the conversation pit, and there’s a flat roof, all together, you really don’t get too many homes out there, especially in this area, that would have all of those features in one,” she told The Bee. “And, of course, John Harvey Carter, being a very well known, established designer/architect, really makes this special.”
