Fly straight to your front door? Ione home listed at $1.9M offers rare runway access
A custom-built estate in Ione, sprawling across 37 acres, has hit the market for $1.89 million with the rare feature of fly-in and fly-out access.
The 3,818-square-foot, three-bedroom and three-bathroom home (17100 Lambert Road) is one of Ione’s most expensive listings, but the location right off a private airport runway and the ability to house an airplane in a 100-by-80 foot hangar sets the property apart, real estate professionals said.
“Eagles Nest is a private airport community,” said Tiffany Kraft, listing agent at Gateway Sotheby’s International Realty, in an email. “The airstrip runs along the perimeter fencing at the front entrance. Homes with direct access to airstrips are rare properties. They offer the ultimate ease of transportation door to door in the most efficient way possible.”
Ione, California, is about one hour southeast of Sacramento and 45 minutes east of Elk Grove.
“If you have a plane, and you’re looking for a home where you can basically store and fly the plane from your parcel, there are a handful of properties sprinkled throughout the region to help make your flying dreams come true,” said Ryan Lundquist, a Sacramento appraiser and housing market analyst.
There aren’t many parcels in the Sacramento area like the Ione property because most people drive cars home instead of planes, Lundquist said. However, a search of sales over the past two decades that included “air strip” in the listing reveals similar types of parcels in Placerville, Elverta, Galt, Rescue, Foresthill, Zamora and Somerset.
“These parcels are usually larger in size, obviously because of the need for taking off and landing. But there are also smaller neighborhoods built with homes backing a private air strip,” he added. “Aviation communities like this are found in Wilton, Cameron Park, Woodland, Sacramento and surely other locations. This is a niche type product that many people don’t know about or think about because they’re not part of the flying lifestyle community.”
For example, a property at 8258 Fair Pines Lane in Garden Valley, featuring two homes on a 20-acre lot with views of Folsom Lake, Sacramento and Mount Diablo, recently hit the market for $1.3 million
“Fly your plane to the home,” the Garden Valley property listing states. “This property is registered and can be certified and permitted via FAA — air strip is already in place.”
The Ione property that just listed has more to offer than a place to house your plane. There are office/guest quarters with kitchen and bath and two rooms and a separate area for storage and workshop space.
“The exquisite home is a statement piece in itself. Every detail has been carefully considered and windows perfectly placed,” the listing states.
The residence, built in 2006, has some special amenities, Kraft noted, such as a child’s bedroom loft, a pull-out bookcase with a secret space behind it and an oversized spa tub.
“The hanger has doubled as a great entertaining space and is flanked by a large shop on one side and an office/guest house on the other,” Kraft said. “It’s been the venue of a few weddings and there are a number of quaint spaces around the property perfect for small gatherings. The land is very usable and could be expanded upon.”
Kraft said she hasn’t received any offers yet, but “we have had quite a bit of interest.”
The home “suits a number of different types of buyers, as the hanger could be used for other purposes than airplane storage,” she added. “Anyone looking for a very nice shop, usable land, gorgeous home and privacy would be an ideal buyer.”
It’s not the first home with an airstrip that Kraft and her colleague, Kristina Agustin at Gateway Sotheby’s International Realty, have listed. The magnificent, historical, 3,760-acre estate Eagle Ridge Ranch in Calaveras County also featured a 55-acre lake and stately 4,400-square-foot main residence along with a runway. It sold for $21 million.
In Trinity Center, California, a 4,125 square-foot custom home located on the only airpark on a lake in the state sold last year for $1.345 million.
“The custom home is ideal for pilots that want easy access to and from the residence,” according to the California Outdoor Properties listing. “It’s an executive’s dream, as Trinity County is an escape from the hectic busy city life to the mountainous, relaxing lake life with many wonders and beauty to be seen and explored.”
