Priciest home for sale in Truckee boasts forest dining, entire wing for kids. See it
A Truckee, California, home listed for $18 million has a dining room with two large glass doors that slide and disappear into the wall to give the feel of eating while in a forest setting and also comes with an entire wing for the children and their nanny.
The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom Lake Tahoe area home, 10213 Birchmont Court, in the luxury community of Martis Camp is the highest-priced listing ever in Truckee, according to the Compass real estate firm. If it sells at the asking price, the deal would top a record $15 million residential sale in 2021, the company said.
This 9,000 square-foot home sits on 2.4 acres, “the most private lot in Martis Camp,” a Compass representative said. From its location on a rocky outcropping, the estate provides magnificent views of Lookout Mountain at Northstar ski resort.
The home includes an entire wing just for the kids, which makes sense because the sellers, Dawn and Margo Smith, have two sets of twins. The wing comes with its own children’s lounge, game loft, two bunk rooms with six built-in bunk beds, an arts and crafts room and a guest room with en suite bathroom for an au pair.
“The location was ideal because we thought if we can get our kids hooked on skiing and golf at a young age, they will have activities that the four of them can do together in childhood through adulthood,” said Dawn Smith via email. “At some level, there was a plot to keep the four kids together and near us for decades to come.”
The family moved to the Truckee residence in 2011 when the kids, now teenagers, were ages 6 and 2.
At the height of the Covid pandemic, the family moved to the Gulf Coast of Florida to be near Dawn’s parents. Now, a waterfront family compound will take place of the mountain retreat.
Trails and pathways at the back of the Camp Martis acreage allow access to The Lodge and The Family Barn. The estate offers mountain, forest, greenbelt and fairway vistas from its windows, loggia, decks and patios.
“Designed to flow seamlessly with the surrounding nature, this grand home ripples around rock outcroppings and meanders through its acreage of woodland, offering a timeless grandeur that harmonizes with the land,” according to the official property listing. “Reviving the romance of Old Tahoe, this estate offers a luxurious space for nature lovers to enjoy the wonder of the Sierra in all seasons.
The new owner will be set for winter. The residence has an 18-foot Christmas tree window, radiant heated floors and custom ski lockers.
“The allure to this estate ... is found in its duality: extremely private yet accessible, grand yet cozy, regal yet inviting,” listing agent Samantha Swigard of Compass said in a statement.
The home includes a golf membership option, she added.
Among the other amenities and features are:
Watchtower Office
Guitar Room
Formal entry with fireplace (Seven fireplaces in all)
Wine cellar/pantry
Authentic wood-burning pizza oven
Outdoor kitchen and fireplace.
The home, which sold for $2.1 million in 2011, was designed by Kurt Reinkens, CEO of MWA Architecture, which won the 2020 “Best Of Houzz” award for Design and Customer Service, according to Compass. The builder was Tony Hardy of Tony Hardy Construction, which was named Builder of the Year in 2016 by the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe.
