Big Shasta County home, ranch once owned by singer of ’70s hit band for sale: $15.6M
A 3,000-acre ranch in Northern California once owned by the lead singer of 1970s soft rock band Bread has been listed for sale for $15.595 million, according to the real estate agency holding the listing.
The current owners bought Carroll Ranch in the Fall RIver Valley in 1999 from David Gates, the frontman of Bread, a group best known for the hits “Make It With Your” (1970) and “Baby I’m-a Want You” (1972), a California Outdoor Properties representative said. Gates bought the ranch in 1974, according to the Wall Street Journal.
An impressive 7,700-square-foot main house was built on the property in 2000 incorporating reclaimed wood from a historical building in Yosemite into the massive beams and large plank flooring, according to the California Outdoor Properties. The wood-and-stone main residence, blending with the landscape, overlooks the ranch land from up on a hill.
The compound is located at 27744 Lee Road in McArthur, California.
“The Carroll Ranch in Shasta County’s Fall River Valley is the kind of ranch folks dream about — privacy, abundant water, fertile soil, irrigated pasture and a self-sustaining cattle operation all with a stunning custom home and breathtaking views,” listing agent Denny Prins of California Outdoor Properties said in an email. “And while McArthur and the ranch are off the beaten path, the ranch is in between Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen, which offer amenities such as an airport with a 5,000-foot runway, medical, dental and veterinary facilities, a hospital with a new emergency room, and numerous restaurants, motels, grocery stores, and more.”
A great room, kitchen, enclosed sunroom, office and master suite occupy the main floor, and the three more bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms are shaped into the hillside.
On the lower floor is a wine cellar, mud room with bath, work-out space and a garden potting spot.
“The gourmet kitchen is a delight,” according to the listing, with a butcher block island, three sinks, two dishwashers, six burner gas range, dual ovens and butler’s pantry.
Guest quarters sit above a detached three-car garage. The grounds feature mature landscaping, stone patios, an in-ground heated pool, spa, waterfall and built-in fire pit. There’s also a five-acre lake on the property.
There’s also a 2,700-square-foot farmhouse with six bedrooms and two baths and 2,000-square-foot manager’s home.
“The new owner will not only enjoy the well-set up farming and cattle aspect of the ranch, but also the multiple hunting and recreational opportunities at their fingertips,” according to the listing. “The Carroll Ranch is a paradise of its own making. The Fall River Valley offers amazing views, rich soils for farming, abundant recreational and hunting opportunities including renowned fly fishing, and a peaceful lifestyle. The valley boasts one of the largest freshwater spring systems in the nation. Water is not an issue here!”
Bread had 13 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 charts between 1970 and 1977.
