Tour this notable Hawaii home ‘with waves breaking around you.’ Yours for $15M

A Hawaii home on Kauai’s pristine Poipu coastline with 290-feet of ocean frontage and amazing views of the famous Acid Drops surf spot is on the market for $15 million.

“Having the waves break around you is a unique experience,” the sellers, restaurant owners Matt and Val Hadwin, said in a statement. “It is peaceful and exciting all at the same time.”

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom residence spanning 3,700 square feet, was designed by Seattle architect Ralph Anderson, who initially built it as his family’s vacation home, according to a representative for Hawaii Life, which holds the listing. Anderson, who died in 2010, was instrumental in the restoration of Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood and the Pike Place Market Historical District.

“I have had lots of beachfront listings in Hawaii, but this one is truly iconic,” Neal Norman, the listing agent with and Lori Decker at Hawaii Life, said about the property. “It’s rare to have such a beautifully designed and perfectly situated home on a beach like this with a world-class surf break just a paddle away. This home has a flawless concept from start to finish with an amazing sense of place and character. And it’s a huge bonus to be close to wonderful amenities and the special, quaint town of Poipu.”

Sitting on a level, nearly one-acre lot, the home features “beautifully crafted scissor beams, lava rock pillars (and) custom floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors,” according to the official property listing.

The surf break can be seen from multiple rooms, as well as from the oceanfront lanai and heated swimming pool. The tropical landscaping leads to a small cove called Keiki Beach.

The home may look best when viewed from out at sea.

“I saw this home while on a boat cruise and the view of it from the water shows the true beauty of the oceanfront home,” said Poipu homeowner Corey Zimmerman, a native of Sacramento, California. “The house was perfectly built to fit the space of the coastline that frames it and the surf break just off of it is spectacular.”

The home at 4914 Lawai Road also comes with a County of Kauai vacation renting license and is managed as a vacation rental home by The Parrish Collection Kauai., according to Hawaii Life.

“To discover a home on Kauai of this refined caliber, on a location of this quality, is highly uncommon,” the listing states.

Zimmerman agreed.

“Many homes in this price range can be ostentatious or overdone,” he added. “Not this one. It’s magnificent, yet tastefully blends in with the surroundings. A real gem that’s also in a great location.”

The property last sold in 2005 for $5.7 million, according to public record.

Although mortgage rates continue to rise, the ultra-luxury market in Hawaii — that is, home sales over $10 million — saw growth in the first half of 2022 with 47 transactions, according to Hawaii Life statistics. The ultra-luxury market grew by $89.4 million, to $782 million, in the first half of 2022, a representative for Hawaii Life said. Ultra-luxury home sales stood at $692.6 million at the time in 2021.
