Work begins on large affordable housing community in south Sacramento neighborhood
Work has begun on a 194-unit affordable housing development in south Sacramento, a critical addition to a part of the region with high rates of poverty.
Anton DevCo began grading in early December on an empty lot at 7243 Power Inn Road, just south of Florin Road. An estimated 20% of the residents of the area’s ZIP code live below the poverty line and the median household income is well below the Sacramento region median.
The company said in a news release that the project, called Anton Mosaic, will have a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. Units will be available to households making between 30% and 70% of the area median income, or between $30,390 and $70,910 for a family of four.
A clubhouse, fitness center, barbecue area and playground will be included in the development, and Pacific Housing – a nonprofit organization that manages affordable housing communities — will “provide onsite resident services such as after school classes, workforce development training and health and wellness programs,” according to the Anton news release.
Construction on the community is expected to be completed in spring 2025.
Despite considerable progress in recent months, Sacramento still faces a severe shortage of affordable housing. More than 23,000 housing units affordable to residents with very low and low incomes need to be added in the county and city of Sacramento this decade, according to an analysis by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments.
