Another significant apartment building has been proposed for midtown Sacramento’s “main street.”

Stonebridge Properties has proposed constructing a 91-unit apartment building at 2130 J St. There is currently a parking lot on the site, which is on the southwest corner of 22nd and J streets.

An application filed with the city of Sacramento shows the building would have 49 studios and 42 one-bedroom units. The smallest units would be 462 square feet, while the largest one-bedroom apartments would be 937 square feet. A ground-floor retail space of 789 square feet would face J Street, according to city documents.

Nine of the residential units would be restricted to residents earning a moderate income, typically between 80% and 120% of the area median income. That “missing middle” income demographic targets residents who are in the service industry, early-career state workers and others making between about $60,000 and $85,000 per year.

The proposed project is two blocks from the 19J apartment complex, a mid-rise residential tower. It’s also about five blocks east of a planned 198-unit apartment building at 16th and J streets that could include a new Whole Foods supermarket on the ground floor.

An analysis by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments determined the city of Sacramento should add more than 8,500 units of housing for moderate-income earners this decade to keep up with demand.
