Modernized, this historic California estate tied to Montecito’s past lists at $22.75M

Originally a carriage house for one of the first grand estates built in Montecito, California, an exquisite 9,905-square-foot residence is for sale for $22.75 million, according to The Agency real estate firm.

The three-story mansion has been completely modernized, according to a representative of The Agency. With five bedrooms and eight bathrooms on a 1.65-acre lot, the main residence has a lift elevator and hidden access to the primary bedroom through a bookshelf.

Montecito is an exclusive community located on the coast in Santa Barbara County, about 100 miles south of San Luis Obispo.

The home at 1741 Glen Oaks Drive was originally constructed in 1895 by famed architect Stanford White, whose work includes Madison Square Garden, the Washington Arch and the Vanderbilt and Astor mansions.

The historic Carriage Estate — “freshly remodeled to blend old with new,” according to the property listing — is constructed with full-cut heart redwood, hard maple, Douglas fir and oak. The entrance is dramatic as guests arrive via a meandering route over a storybook bridge, down a tree-lined lane and past double gates to a pair of circular driveways lined with hand-cut Italian curbing stone.

Inside, numerous windows frame the treetop views of the grounds, as well as the Santa Ynez Mountain range beyond.

Other notable features are:

▪ A sleek Danish Vipp kitchen with Miele appliances and stainless steel countertops.

▪ Library

▪ Great room with soaring 18-foot ceilings

▪ Bar room

▪ Elevator

▪ Secret bookshelf door that leads to the upstairs primary bedroom.

Expansive lawns, olive trees, large patios and a 1,000-square-foot guest house lie outside. The guest house has an ensuite bedroom, living room and kitchen.

A reflective pond, fire pit, garden and bocce ball court are also part of the luxurious backyard.

DS Infinity Holdings is listed as the property’s owner, according to public records. Daniel Starr, a tech entrepreneur and real estate investor, bought the home for $13 million about a year ago, according to Dirt, which tracks and writes about high-end real estate deals.

Starr is the founder of the video game streaming service GameMine.

Eric Haskell of The Agency holds the listing.
