This sunken firepit built into circular pool makes big splash in California desert home

An architectural gem set against the backdrop of Joshua Tree National Park’s majestic mountains and rock sculptures is for sale for $8 million, and the 2.3-acre property’s most stunning amenity is a sunken fireplace built into a one-of-a-kind semi-circular pool.

Called Project Aerie, the dramatic residence “is a symphony of creativity, artistry and the crown jewel of the prestigious Poesis Collection,” which is a group of masterfully built homes on a single street in Joshua Tree., California, according to the property listing.

The main home spans 6,000 square feet with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The futuristic design was inspired by the desert area’s soaring red-tailed hawks, the architect said in an article by Robb Report, a luxury lifestyle magazine.

“Aerie is conceived as an elemental winged form, surveying far in all directions,” Siddhartha Majumdar of the Wyota Workshop said. “The lightness of wings generates the roof, which floats delicately above glass walls atop a heavy concrete base that dissolves into the rocks and blurring the lines between building and nature.”

The property is a new construction that will be completed in two years, according to a representative of The Agency, which holds the listing.

The most striking feature is the pool with the sunken firepit at one end and a water feature at the other. Also, a prominent reflecting pool basically extends through the home in the opposite direction.

“The design of this flowing water operates at a cosmic level, connecting the earth to the sky through platonic shapes and forms,” the architect said in the Robb Report article.

While eyes go straight to the pools, the meticulously crafted interior is stunning, too. The design includes nearly every amenity a homeowner could want — and sometimes double — from the expansive double island kitchen to the primary suite with a fireplace, soaking tub, two showers, two commodes, two vanities and two walk-in closets.

There’s a state-of-the-art gym, sauna and whirlpool and a 12-seat screening room with a bar.

A 700-square-foot separate guest house comes with a bedroom, bathroom and island kitchen.

Nearly every window offers fantastic views of the rocky desert landscape.

“Unrivaled in design, Project Aerie is a true architectural masterpiece,” the property listing states.

The home is 10 minutes from the entrancy to Joshua Tree National Park.

Crystal Icardi, Kevin Stewart, Jon Grauman and Adam Rosenfeld of The Agency are the listing agents.
