King of Concrete selling his California luxury log home with Mount Shasta views: $5.7M
A remarkable luxury log home in Northern California is stunning from the outside: At 4,000-foot elevation, the property sits among pines, oaks and dogwoods on 55 acres and takes in the majestic sights of Mt. Shasta and Lake Siskiyou.
From the inside, the 7,600-square-foot home’s craftsmanship and detail is eye-popping, too: A meticulously hand-carved wood eagle sits above the front door and, in the great room, two sculpted wooden bears climb a magnificent, polished, 20-foot-tall structural tree that holds up the roof.
The house is constructed from durable Canadian western red cedar logs. The great room with the “feature tree” also showcases a two-story stone fireplace.
Called Sentinel Retreat, the custom-built mansion is owned by businessman and self-made millionaire Boyce Muse of Redding, California, who has been nicknamed the King of Concrete.
“I pour concrete for a living and it’s made me a millionaire,” he told CNBC in a profile about his life, his business and his elegantly rustic Mount Shasta vacation retreat.
Growing up in Northern California, Muse said his family lived hand to mouth.
“We were very poor,” he said. “Me and one of my brothers actually slept in the wood shed for a couple of years.”
No longer. His sprawling getaway at 4620 W.A. Barr Road is on the market for $5.7 million.
The mountain views, seen from nearly every room in the house, can also be enjoyed from a 1,700-square-foot outdoor deck. There is also guest quarters above the garage that spans 1,000 square feet. The casually luxurious main home soars to three levels, with four spacious bedrooms and four total bathrooms.
The kitchen area is expansive with a Wolf stove range and counter seating.
The master bedroom reveals a vaulted ceiling, fireplace, en-suite bathroom, soaking tub, walk-in closet and sliding doors to an outside deck.
“What makes this property special, besides the beautiful logs and the layout, is the one-of-a-kind details,” listing agent Todd Renfrew of California Outdoor Properties said in an email. “The eagle carved above the front door. The bear on the feature tree in the living room. The bear and deer footprints on the driveway. You can tell they really enjoyed building this remarkable log home and they’ve taken really good care of it.”
The sensational views stand out to Renfrew, too: “Mount Shasta is something you never get tired of looking at.”
The home is entered through gates and up a half-mile of paved driveway.
“No matter the season, right outside your front door or just a short drive away, outdoor recreation abounds — hiking, biking, climbing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking,” according to the property listing. “Try your luck casting your rod in the world-class Upper Sacramento or McCloud rivers or in the many surrounding mountain lakes.”
Golf and skiing opportunities abound, too.
“The log cabin was built to entertain — there are so many nooks and crannies where people can hang out and have a conversation while still being part of the big group,” Renfrew added.
Muse Concrete employs about 120 workers with gross revenue of nearly $20 million, according to CNBC. Muse’s wife Joyce serves as the company’s chief financial officer.
