See the flow of hexagon-shaped Sacramento home with ‘unparalleled’ river views: $2.95M
Retired Sacramento surgeon Satya Chatterjee’s favorite sitting place in his luxurious home atop the Fair Oaks bluffs is in the great room where unobstructed views of the American River can be seen through floor-to-ceiling windows.
On clear days, he can see all the way to the Sierra Nevada, where the melting snowpack feeds the iconic waterway.
“The views are unparalleled,” listing agent Alexis Jones of House Real Estate said. “I’ve never seen any view like this in the area. There’s nothing else like it on the market.”
The 6,200-square-foot, hexagon-shaped riverfront home has hit the market for $2.95 million. The showstopper sits on 2.58 acres, just east of the Sunrise Bridge.
The four-bedroom, five-bathroom residence at 8147 Riverfront Lane has a separate guest wing for privacy.
Picturesque views are found from nearly every room and at every turn. Multiple outdoor patios and decks look over the water. Still, the house might stand out as much for its livability and architecture as its stunning vistas.
Polygon-shaped house
The home is defined by its six-sided polygon shape and cathedral ceilings. Upstairs, a great room unfolds across an expansive open floor plan, seamlessly combining the gourmet kitchen, dining room and living room. At the apex of the hexagon, perhaps 40-feet high, sunlight cascades into the house through six skylights set against a light-colored pine ceiling.
A main feature of the great room is a cozy, sunken conversation pit showcasing a standalone stone fireplace with a beautiful, large copper vent.
“The view is the main focal point,” Jones said. “There are just so many areas to be outside, different decks, different views. It’s just spectacular. And then there’s the (hexagon) and the light that it brings in, and the high ceilings. I think when you come in here, you can’t help but just have your breath taken away.”
The design of the house is ideal for hosting parties. One of her fondest memories of living in the home is entertaining friends and family, said Patricia Chatterjee, the doctor’s wife.
On the main level, a formal entry leads visitors to a wet bar adjacent to a parlor where guests can grab a drink and hors d’oeuvres. From there, they can walk out to a patio with grand river views. Stairs to the right of the foyer lead up to a formal dining room.
“I loved entertaining here,” Patricia Chatterjee said. “It was always great fun to set everything up. We’d put our appetizers down there, and then we generally served dinner up here.”
‘Moon night parties’
“Moon night parties,” as her husband called them, took entertaining to the next level. Watching the full moon grow from the deck and reflecting on the water was something spectacular, Patricia Chatterjee said.
“The moon comes up right over the river so he would always check for the full moon, and that’s when we had to have our parties,” she said. “(He would) check off the days on the calendar if it’s a full moon. It was truly spectacular.”
The proximity to the river and distant mountain views were always a special part of the property, but when the Chatterjees purchased the home 22 years ago the house needed a lot of work. They underwent an extensive renovation that took nearly four years to complete. The property has only seen two owners over the years.
In addition to the natural setting of verdant trees and shrubbery, the grounds pop with lush and formal landscaping. The abundance of trees on the property doesn’t obscure the river views.
A detached polygon deck invites the sipping of cocktails and viewing nature very close to the water. There’s the potential to build a formal access trail down to the shore.
The community of Gold River sits on the opposite shore across the river.
Shopping and dining in Fair Oaks Village, which is upgrading its theater, is only a short walk away.
“Yet relish the seclusion and exclusivity of this rare riverfront sanctuary,” the property listing states.
We just had a lot of good times here, a lot of family times,” Patricia Chatterjee said. “everybody came here because I had the room.”
