See aerial view of five-story housing project going up where Tower Records once stood
A new five-story housing development is taking shape at the site where the iconic Tower Records building used to stand in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento.
Drone video taken earlier this week by The Sacramento Bee gives a glimpse of the future at Land Park Drive and Broadway.
The construction work now resembles what the building’s final shape will look like, with floors and walls framed. Next to it, the landmark Tower Theatre remains much taller than the new structure.
In April, crews began preparing the site at 2500 16th St. to prepare for the multi-use building that will combine apartments and retail space.
Considered a local landmark, the single-story brick building once neighbored Tower Café, Tower Liquor and Tower Real Estate.
After Dimple Records took over the storefront, the Tower Records building was demolished in 2019.
Plans to develop a mixed-use real estate building at the Broadway site had been in the works for years, The Bee reported in 2019.
Kelli Trapani, spokesperson with the city of Sacramento’s Community Development Department, told The Bee the building will have five stories and include 68 apartment units, ranging from studios to one and two bedrooms.
There will be a ground floor with three spaces for retail, as well as two restaurant areas with outdoor dining patios.
Tower Records began in 1960 when Russell Solomon opened the first store in Sacramento. The company grew to 160 locations across the country and the world. In its heyday, Tower Records achieved annual sales of $1 billion.
The company closed in 2006, but announced its return as an online retailer in 2020.
Solomon died in 2018 at the age of 92.
