A sight that’s usually seen in New Mexico and Arizona has landed on the real estate market in California — an earthship.

While this particular eco-friendly home has been on the market in the past, it’s a rarity to see one outside of desert states, McClatchy News reported back in 2023, when the home was listed for $1.49 million.

Now, it’s listed for $2.5 million.

“Designed by renowned architect Michael Reynolds, this visionary 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Earthship seamlessly integrates sustainability with luxury. The home utilizes passive solar heating and the earth’s natural insulation to achieve near-total energy self-sufficiency,” a news release about the house noted.

Reynolds is the father of the unique build and design of the homes, which are usually built with “natural and recycled materials with energy conservation in mind,” Earthship Biotecture says.

“The Earthship Residence is a sustainable, independent home. It’s buried on three sides, and has a metal roof making it high-wind and fire resistant, as well as energy efficient as it heats itself,” Reynolds said about the California home in a news release.

One of the most stand-out features for this California earthship is that it’s built with fire-resistant materials and “surrounded by a National Wildlife Federation-certified habitat,” the release says.

Other features, per the listing, in and around the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home include:

  • “Drought-tolerant gardens”

  • Open floorplan

  • Chef’s kitchen

  • “Thermador appliances”

  • Natural light

  • “Energy-efficient windows”

  • Skylights

  • Garage

Inside, the open-concept design of the Earthship residence showcases a gourmet Thermador kitchen, a sunlit great room with 120 linear feet of energy-efficient windows, and ten operable skylights.
