A modern California coastal residence with panoramic views of the Big Sur coastline on five untouched acres has hit the market for $1.85 million.
The main home is minimalist and striking in its design. It is also cozy, spanning 1,325 square feet with one bedroom and one bathroom.
Located 10 minutes from Pfeiffer Beach and offering miles and miles of scenic hiking trails, the serene retreat seems to embody the coastal lifestyle of Big Sur.
“At night, the open sky reveals an intensity of stars rarely seen, accompanied by the calming soundscape of nature and waves crashing on the coast below,” the property listing states.
The home’s open-concept layout blends indoors and outdoors. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring natural light into the main living area and dining room. The glass walls frame amazing sunsets and offer a front-row seat for watching the coastal fog roll in and out.
“In my opinion, properties with panoramic views of the ocean never go out of style, and are quite resilient to market fluctuations.” listing agent Brian Linder of Compass said.
The property is an “aesthetic getaway from big city life,” according to Linder, a member of the American Institute of Architects. He is co-listing the property with Jonathan Spencer of Compass.
The interior has wood accents throughout. A galley-style kitchen is accessible from both ends and showcases sleek finishes. The primary bedroom, with a spacious bathroom, is adjacent to the kitchen. There’s a dedicated office space with a daybed, as well.
A small, detached guest house can accommodate visitors or be used for an artist’s studio.
”Some of the best features in the home include: the integration of the architecture into the native landscape, the flow of the open floor plan, the minimal palette of materials and the proximity of the natural environment, especially the play of sunlight and fog throughout the day, the constantly changing color of the ocean and the spectacular display of stars in the light-free night sky,” Linder said.
The property is owned by Heinz Legler and Veronique Lievre, founders of BoutiqueHomes, a company specializing in the curation and listing of unique vacation rentals. They bought the home in 2006 for $935,000, according to public property records.
“The way the house is designed, you get the view not only to the sea, but to the hills behind,” Lievre said in an email. “It’s a smaller minimalist home, but since it opens on each side with sliding doors you can totally enjoy the landscape and different light. The house honors the natural beauty around it.”
The orientation of the house is strongly suited to Big Sur’s weather, she added.. When it’s windy, one side of the house offers protection. When it’s hot, one side is always in the shade, and when it’s foggy, the property usually sits above the fog line, according to Lievre.
“Every room feels connected to the horizon, drawing in light, air, and a sense of boundless space,” she said. “It’s not just a house—it’s a front-row seat to ever-changing scenery. There’s a stillness here that you don’t just hear—you feel it.”
While secluded, the home has a window/wall unit for cooling and electric heating, according to the property description.
