Apple product developer Steve Hotelling and his wife Susie have enjoyed for years the views and direct beach access of their residence atop a Santa Cruz oceanfront point.
Offered at nearly $16 million, the East Cliff Drive property now awaits its next beach-loving owner.
A gated path leads down to a 500 feet of sandy beachfront.
“While the views are amazing, I love the direct beach access to go for an afternoon swim,” Steve Hotelling, who was behind such Apple innovations as Touch ID, Face ID and multitouch interfaces, said in a news release.
Scenery changes
The 4,715-square-foot home sits on three-quarters of an acre and takes in panoramic, 240° views of the ocean. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the beach and harbor lighthouse.
“Between the wildlife, the harbor, and the weather, the scenery is always changing,” Susie Hotelling said in a statement via email. “The home has a commanding view, great public beach and harbor access, and yet feels very private when you are in it.”
Every concept behind the remodeled residence was designed to invite the outdoors into the home. The ocean views continue from the hot tub and sun patio that faces the surf.
Other features include an atrium-style game room and gourmet kitchen with a center island and wet bar. Four en-suite bedrooms are found throughout the home. A private lower-level apartment comes with a full kitchen, living room and guest suite.
Listing agent Tim Allen of Coldwell Banker Realty notes the history of the property.
“East Cliff is one of Santa Cruz’s most iconic oceanfront estates—perched between Blacks Beach and the harbor, famed as the historic ‘Pink House’ once used by sea captains as a navigational landmark,” he said in a statement. “With new construction, top-tier amenities, and a seawall, it stands among the finest properties on the California coast.”
The Hotellings purchased the iconic property in 2019 for about $9.7 million, according to public property records.
