Two historic, unmatched, multimillion properties along the rugged Central California coastline of Big Sur have sold this month.

The first one was part of a longtime retreat being sold as separate listings. Bien Sur — 53810 Highway 1 —is considered by many as the crown jewel of the Big Sur oceanfront properties, according to Truszkowski Freedman & Associates of Sotheby’s International Realty – Carmel Brokerage, which represented the sellers and buyers for both deals.

Spanning 43 acres with 19 acres fronting the Pacific Ocean, Bien Sur sold for $17 million. The property was listed for $21.5 million.

The estate includes four combined parcels of land assembled over the years to create a one-of-a-kind secluded ocean sanctuary.

Alongside the main house, the property encompasses multiple guest houses, a caretaker’s unit and the region’s only funicular which leads to the grand estate perched cliffside at the water’s edge.

In a park-like setting, luxurious outdoor amenities include sprawling lawns, a soaking tub, bocce ball court, koi ponds, Zen gardens, multiple outdoor view decks and fire pits.

Bien Sur was owned and nurtured by the late insurance mogul, philanthropist and entrpreneur Peter Mullin and his widow, Merle Mullin.

Casa Luna

The other estate called Casa Luna— a one-of-a-kind architectural masterpiece by the creator of Big Sur’s famous Post Ranch Inn, Mickey Muennig — sold for $4.8 million.

Located at 46304 Pfeiffer Ridge, Casa Luna was inspired by a visit to small villages in Greece. It’s name comes from the home elegantly mirroring the curves of the moon and the rhythms of nature.

The property is set on more than five private acres dotted with fruit trees, garden beds and lush landscaping within a gated community. The home is just minutes from Pfeiffer Beach.
