For families with school-age children, buying a new home also means navigating a patchwork of new school district boundaries and enrollment criteria.

Here are some of the basics to get you started:

Sacramento City Unified School District

For Sacramento City Unified, enrollment for the 2022-23 school year began May 9.

The district’s enrollment center, at 5601 47th Ave., is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Support desk staff at this office is available to answer questions on the enrollment process.

You can either register online or fill out a paper registration packet by hand, which can be dropped off at the Enrollment Center lobby. The hours for the self-service lobby are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and only five people are allowed to enter at a time.

Required documentation for enrollment include photo identification, state issued or otherwise; address verification; birth certificate; immunization record (Tdap booster shot is required for Grades 7-12); current withdrawal grades and transcripts (required for grades 9-12); an individualized education plan for special education students; and custody documents, if applicable.

Acceptable address verification documents include: a utility service contract, a declaration of residency, property tax receipts, a rental property contract, a voter registration card, government agency correspondence or pay stubs.

The district requests people do not provide original documentation and provide copies instead.

All applications are reviewed in the order they are received. Processing times for online and paper forms range from five to 10 days, when a technician will email you directly.

The open enrollment period for students in kindergarten through eighth grade to request a school outside of their assigned one closed Feb. 15. The district uses an application process for students in ninth through 12th grades, which is also closed for the next school year.

Open enrollment is a limited registration program that allows some students to attend schools outside of their assigned district.

Enrollment is open throughout the summer for parents to register their students. The first day of school for the 2022-2023 year is Sept. 1.

San Juan Unified School District

Enrollment for the 2022-23 school year at San Juan Unified School District began Feb. 8.

Registration is available online, for the most part. The district also offers select appointment slots for families who would rather register in-person.

“We encourage families to use our online enrollment option, however if you would like to schedule an appointment to enrollment in person, please use the tool below,” the website reads.

You can use the district’s calendar tool to schedule a 20-minute appointment, and bringing paper copies of the necessary documents is required for the meeting.

Required documents for enrollment include two proofs of residence, proof of age, immunization record, and an individualized education plan and/or custody documents, if applicable. Transcripts and withdrawal grades are required for students enrolling in sixth through 12th grades.

The processing time for online registration is one to two days.

Open enrollment for families living in the district closed Jan. 21.

Elk Grove Unified School District

This district allows parents and legal guardians to enroll their children into school at any time during the school year.

For in-person enrollment, parents of students in first through 12th grades can pick up a registration packet from their home school, which can be found on the online school boundary locator. Required documents and completed applications must be submitted to the school.

Documents required for enrollment include age and legal name verification, immunization records, photo identification, proof of residence and transcript grades, if applicable.

The district’s online enrollment site is also open, available through the district’s student information system, Synergy. For questions about enrollment, the district says to contact the front office of the school in which you are trying to enroll your student.

Folsom-Cordova School District

Enrolling new students in Folsom-Cordova differs depending on grade level and school. To figure out your home boundary school, use the district’s locator.

For new elementary students, parents must fill out the pre-enrollment information form and bring required documents to the school office if opting for in-person registration. Initial required documents include proof of age, proof of residency and a copy of immunization records.

And for new kindergarten students, additional documents are required, including health examination and oral assessment forms.

For returning elementary, middle and high school students, the same documents are required. Online student registration for these students began Feb. 1 via the PowerSchool/InfoSnap portal.

Enrollment requirements and forms vary by secondary school, which include Folsom, Mills, Mitchell and Sutter Middle Schools and Cordova, Folsom and Vista del Lago High Schools.

Rocklin Unified School District

Registration at Rocklin Unified began for students in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade on Jan. 18.

Online registration is available for previously enrolled students. For returning students who previously left the district, parents should contact the school where they will be attending.

Required documents include proof of residence and proof of birth or child’s age, which can be a birth certificate or passport. Necessary immunization records must also be sent to the school.

Registration for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs began Jan. 18. For transitional kindergarten, a child’s birth date must be between Sept. 2, 2017, and Feb. 2, 2018, while interested kindergarten students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2022.

Natomas Unified School District

To enroll at Natomas Unified, the district recommends first finding your school by entering your address in its school locator tool.

Online enrollment is available, and it includes three options.

Parents wanting to enroll students at their regular boundary school can either fill out an online or paper registration form.

Families living within district boundaries who wish for their student to attend a different NUSD school must fill out an intradistrict transfer request. The transfer request window closed Jan. 31, but interested families can still apply after this date.

For those who do not live in NUSD and want to enroll their kids in the district, parents must fill out an interdistrict transfer permit. The family’s current district of residence will provide the necessary paperwork.

Twin Rivers

The Twin Rivers school district hosts a variety of community events to provide support to people filling out the online application. An enrollment pop up schedule is available on the district website.

Registration for most students is available online. Families of current sixth- and eighth-graders do not need to enroll online again, as the system pre-enrolls them into their next junior high or high school.

Roseville City School District

Enrollment for the 2022-23 school year at Roseville City School District opened Jan. 3.

Registration for new and returning students is available online, and new families must create an account on the portal. Preschool families should call (916) 771-1605, extension 50326, for information and availability.

The district noted on its website that Orchard Ranch Elementary School reached registration capacity on March 21, and those who have registered after this date will be moved to Riego Creek Elementary. If availability opens up at Orchard Ranch, residents with the earliest registration date will be notified first.
