Yosemite hikers rescued by helicopter in North Dome area

Two male hikers in Yosemite National Park were rescued by helicopter Wednesday evening.

Yosemite officials announced the rescue Thursday evening on social media, writing that park rangers, search-and-rescue personnel, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter rescued the hikers in the North Dome area.

They were uninjured and hoisted out by helicopter. Emergency responders received a 911 call from the hikers around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday but were unable to make contact that night due to darkness, rain, sleet, fog and technical terrain, the park wrote on its Facebook page.

Early Wednesday, with assistance from CHP helicopter H-40 out of Fresno, rescuers were dropped off above the stranded party. The rescuers descended to their location and got them back up to a location where the helicopter could get them out. The helicopter landed in Ahwahnee Meadow in Yosemite Valley.

The rescuers were able to hike out safely before dark.

No more information was immediately available. The park is operating with fewer employees due to the government shutdown.

Earlier this month, a man died in Yosemite after falling above Nevada Fall.
