One dead after gunman opens fire on Greyhound bus bound for San Francisco, cops say

Gunfire broke out early Monday aboard a San Francisco-bound Greyhound bus outside Los Angeles, killing one and injuring five, KTLA and other local media outlets report.

The shooting took place about 1:30 a.m. near Lebec, California, on Interstate 5 going over the Grapevine north of L.A., according to The Whittier Daily News. Several passengers called 911.

The gunman had been mumbling incoherently since boarding the bus, said passenger Mark Grabban, 29, NBC News reported.

“He was muttering things, about ‘wait till we get to the station,’” Grabban said, according to the network. After another passenger asked him to be quiet, the man began cursing and opened fire.

Most of the 40 passengers on board were asleep in the darkened bus, which had left Los Angeles at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, when the shots rang out, KCBS reported.

Frightened passengers sought refuge in the back of the bus while a few subdued the gunman, also a passenger, according to the station.

The driver stopped to let the gunman off the bus, then pulled off the highway into a gas station, KABC reported.

“I saw the blood on the floor of the aisle. I looked to the woman on the left, and she wasn’t responding, wasn’t moving or anything. She was lifeless,” said Grabban, NBC News reported. “It was horrifying to see. I hadn’t seen anything like it.”

The slain passenger was identified as a 51-year-old woman from Colombia, KABC reported. Two of the injured are listed in serious condition.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone and every family member impacted by the incident today,” a Greyhound statement said, the Los Angeles Times reported. “We are gathering details and will assist the Kern County police in every way possible during their investigation.”
