Thousands of candles, basketballs and more left at Kobe Bryant memorial in L.A.
A memorial outside Staples Center for Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others killed in a helicopter crash included staggering numbers of candles, basketballs, shoes, flowers and other items, KCBS reports.
Cleanup crews removed the memorial outside the arena where the Los Angeles Lakers play on Monday, NBC News reported. At her request, some of the items will be given to Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa.
Kobe Bryant, 41, died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on his way to a youth basketball game with his daughter, Gianna, 13, The New York Times reported. Bryant, who retired from the Lakers in 2016, won five championship rings during his legendary 20-year NBA career.
The crash also killed Payton Chester, 13, Sarah Chester, 45, Alyssa Altobelli, 14, Keri Altobelli, 46, John Altobelli, 56, Christina Mauser, 38, and the helicopter’s pilot, Ara Zobayan, 50, CNN reported.
The bodies of all nine victims have been released to their families, according to the network.
After the crash, a steady stream of fans and mourners built an enormous memorial outside Staples Center.
On Monday, cleanup crews removed more than 25,000 candles, 1,300 basketballs, 5,000 signs or letters, 500 stuffed animals, 350 pairs of shoes and 14 banners, KTLA reported.
Crews also filled a 40-yard waste bin with flowers, which will be turned into mulch for landscaping around Staples Center, according to the station.
“Truly amazing the outpouring of love from the City of Angels in honor of the 9 who lost their lives 1/26/20,” Staples Center President Lee Zeidman wrote on Twitter.
The NBA also announced that uniforms at the league’s all-star game on Feb. 16 will feature special patches honoring Kobe and Gianna Bryant as well as the others killed in the crash, the Los Angeles Times reports.
