Inmate stabbed to death Friday by two fellow inmates at state prison in Southern California
A 21-year-old inmate was stabbed to death by two other inmates at Calipatria State Prison on Friday, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Joseph Martinez was attacked in the general population yard of Facility C by Robert A. Garcia and Brian Figueroa around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, according to the release. Martinez suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and back and was pronounced dead at 4:32 p.m.
Officers used chemical agents and a non-lethal 40mm round to subdue the attackers and allow medical staff to tend to Martinez. Garcia and Figueroa have been moved to segregated housing as the investigation continues.
One inmate-made weapon was recovered and the death is being investigated as a homicide.
Martinez was less than a year into a 24 years-to-life sentence for attempted first-degree murder and inflicting great bodily injury.
Garcia, 24, is serving a 50 year-to-life sentence with the possibility of parole for attempted first-degree murder, intentional discharge of a firearm and vehicle theft.
Figueroa, 26, is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder. The murder conviction was his second strike.
