Social distancing report card: Which California counties are doing the best?

California received a solid ‘A’ for its social distancing efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus, but some counties scored better than others.

The data collector Unacast created an interactive map giving states and counties a score on their social distancing initiatives at the local level. The company scored each state individually by their change in average mobility, based on distance traveled.

California’s mobility was down about 48 percent, according to the analysis. The analysis also ranked the top five best and worst counties in California, based on their social distancing measures.

The top five best counties in California, all of which received an A in social distancing efforts, were Napa, San Francisco, Orange, Santa Clara and Marin.

The top five worst counties, all of which received an F in social distancing efforts, were Colusa, Modoc, Tehama, Siskiyou and Plumas.

Social distancing is currently the most effective way to slow the spread of coronavirus, according to the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel in California has gradually declined since March 13, although there was a 5% increase between March 15 and March 17. As reported cases of coronavirus rise, travel decreases, according to Unacast’s data table.
