The 2020 harvest of prunes is under way in California, with the industry estimating this year’s crop to be no larger than 75,000 short tons, with the potential to be slightly lower in volume.

Sacramento Valley Water captured the harvest on video (see above).

“The fruit in the orchards is developing into the exceptional quality that California prunes are known for,” wrote the California Prune Board, which represents about 800 prune growers and 28 prune, juice and ingredient handlers, on its website.

The prune harvest typically runs from August to mid-September.

California provides approximately 40 percent of the world’s over 90 percent of the nation’s supply. There are more than 40,000 bearing acres of prune orchards concentrated in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.
