More flight cancellations affect passengers at Fresno’s airport. Here’s the latest
SkyWest Airlines is apparently continuing to feel the fallout from computer server problems that forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights nationwide over the past two days, including dozens to or from Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
By 8 a.m. Saturday, the Utah-based airline – which operates flights in Fresno under agreements with Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines – had canceled its scheduled 9:15 a.m. United Express flight from Fresno to Denver, as well as the scheduled 9:15 departure of its Alaska Airlines flight to San Diego.
FlightAware.com, a website that tracks airline arrivals, departures, delays and cancellations, reported that across SkyWest’s nationwide route network, 127 flights had been scuttled as of Saturday afternoon, and 251 others were experiencing delays.
This weekend’s disruptions follow two previous days of flight cancellations and delays that the airline blamed Thursday on a server outage in its computer systems. That’s when the airline and its fleet of Embraer and Bombardier regional jets saw 666 flight cancellations and 558 flight delays, including 10 cancellations of flights to and from Fresno and 15 delays.
Late Thursday, the airline said it had fixed the computer issues and hoped that schedule problems would be “minimized” on Friday. But Friday saw even more SkyWest cancellations and delays: 707 cancellations and 703 delays nationwide, according to FlightAware. At Fresno, that included 12 cancellations and 18 delays.
Among the cancellations Friday evening in Fresno were United-branded flights from Denver and San Francisco, and a flight operated on behalf of Alaska Airlines from Los Angeles. Departures from Fresno that were scrubbed Friday afternoon and evening were a Delta-branded flight to Salt Lake City and a United flight to San Francisco.
Most of the flights into and out of Fresno each year, while bearing the names of more familiar airlines, are operated by SkyWest under contracts with those major airlines. Of the 6,471 domestic flights leaving Fresno Yosemite International Airport from January through July this year, 4,424 of them – more than 68% – were flown by SkyWest.
