A student at the University of California, San Diego was attending a party on the eighth floor of a residence hall when he fell to his death Friday night, officials said.

Aaron Fan, 18, was at the party when campus police came to investigate the gathering at the university’s Tioga Hall. Fan went into the bathroom, and witnesses saw him fall out of the window “a short while later,” at 11:44 p.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Bystanders “immediately called 911,” and Fan was transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple injuries, the medical examiner’s report said.

Fan was pronounced dead by a hospital physician at 3:31 a.m., despite “life-saving efforts,” the medical examiner’s report said.

The university is investigating Fan’s death, according to a statement provided to McClatchy News.

“UC San Diego is providing counseling and other support services to our students and team members,” the statement said. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

Colin Tournat, a fellow freshman who lived at Tioga Hall, said he saw Fan fall. He rushed over to Fan to try and help, Fox 5 reported.

“He was in my arms breathing and then there was nothing I could do, unfortunately there’s nothing anyone can do,” Tournat told Fox 5.

Deepali Yedulapuram, one of Fan’s friends since high school, told Fox 5 that she’s struggling to process what happened.

“I’ve never really had to deal with death and having to do with someone who I was pretty close with, someone who had a big part of my high school experience and life in general is very hard,” she said.

Fan’s death occurred during the university’s homecoming weekend. He was a student at the university’s John Muir College, KUSI reported.

Some students have lingering questions about how Fan’s death happened, The La Jolla Light reported.

“This is an incredible tragedy,” Manu Agni, president of Associated Students at UCSD, told The La Jolla Light. “Everyone needs to respect the privacy of the victim and his family. But the university needs to be transparent about what happened and how it happened to make sure it never happens again.”
