California gas prices saw one of largest increases in US this week. See costs in your county

California ranked among 10 U.S. states with the largest weekly pump price increase, according to a new gas report.

The current average price for regular gas in California is about $4.62, according to data from the American Automobile Association.

The state saw about a 4-cent increase from Thursday of last week to Thursday this week.

The state mirrors a national increase in gas demand but a slow pump price increase, according to a Thursday report from AAA. As of Friday, the current national average for a gallon of regular gas was $3.42.

The other U.S. states that recorded the largest average increases include Ohio, Arizona, Indiana, New Mexico, Illinois, Minnesota, Hawaii, Maine and West Virginia.

The data used in this interactive map, collected from AAA, was last updated Friday.

Fuel saving tips

  • Slow down and drive the speed limit because, on the highway, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly as speeds increase above 50 mph.
  • If your car will be stopped for more than 60 seconds, shut off the engine to save fuel.
  • When approaching a red light or stop sign, take your foot off the gas early and allow your car to coast down to a slower speed until it is time to brake.
  • Accelerate smoothly with light to moderate throttle.
  • Use cruise control to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel. However, never use cruise control on slippery roads because a loss of vehicle control could result.
  • Minimize your use of air conditioning.
  • Remove unnecessary and bulky items from your car. It takes more fuel to accelerate a heavier car, and the reduction in fuel economy is greater for small cars than larger models.
  • AAA research has found that unless premium fuel is recommended or required by your car’s manufacturer, it provides no added benefit. Motorists should refer to their vehicle’s owner’s manual to check which type of gasoline is recommended for their engine.
