A 39-year-old man is accused of stabbing and killing his mother in California, authorities said.

The 74-year-old woman called 911 for help after she was stabbed on Monday, Nov. 8, in Walnut Creek, police said in a news release.

Officers took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead despite “life saving measures,” police said.

Nicholas Roth of Walnut Creek was arrested at the scene.

Roth has been an employee of the Bay Area News Group since 2008, where he covered prep sports, the sports TV and radio guide, youth sports results and the golf events section, according to his biography at The Mercury News.

The Bay Area News Group is the largest daily news publisher in the San Francisco Bay Area. It includes The Mercury News, East Bay Times and Marin Independent Journal.

Roth was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. His bail is set at $1,160,000.
