Two bicyclists die after hit-and-run in California, police say. Now a man’s been arrested
A California man was arrested in a hit-and-run that left two cyclists dead, local media reported.
Nelson Rodriguez, 58, was identified as the driver of a Toyota Tacoma that police said was involved in the Jan. 4 incident. He was arrested on a murder charge, police said.
The crash occurred around 7:10 p.m., when the red 2006 Tacoma collided with a bicyclist in her 30s and another bicyclist in his 50s, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
The driver fled and his truck collided with other vehicles and property before crashing into a wall, the release said. He was detained by witnesses until police arrived and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment before being arrested.
The two bicyclists died at the scene, police said.
The man who died was 58-year-old Matthew Zink, NBC Los Angeles reported. Samuel Castillo, who said he was one of Zink’s sons, told the outlet that his father was a mechanic and that the female friend Zink was riding bikes with was pregnant.
“It’s hard to accept,” Castillo told the outlet. “I still can’t even accept it right now. Especially for him to go out like that. It’s not OK.”
Rodriguez was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail and is being held on a $4 million bail, according to jail records.
